It is mainly used for drying oil cracking gas, olefin, gas refining plant, oil field gas, chemical industry, medicine, insulating glass and other industrial desiccant.

Mineral desiccant mineral desiccant mainly uses natural attapulgite, also known as Palygorskite or Palygorskite. It was discovered by Savchenko in The Ural of the Soviet Union in 1862. In 1913, It was named Palygorskite by Feffsman according to the mining area discovered. The mineral was later found in the bleached soils of Attapulgus in Georgia, USA, and Mormoronne in France, where it was adopted by Delabrente in 1935. In 1976, Chinese scholar Xu Jiquan translated it into "attapulgite" based on the sound of Attapulgite and the crystal structure characteristics of the mine, which has been widely used in China in recent years. Attapulgite is a kind of water-rich magnesium aluminum silicate clay mineral with 2 ∶ 1 chain structure. Its ideal molecular formula is: (Mg, Al, Fe)5Si8O20(HO)2(OH2)4·4H2O, theoretical chemical composition is: SiO2 56.96%; (Mg, Al, Fe)O 23.83%; 19.21% H2O. Attapulgite is rotated 180° every certain period along the corner top of the Y-axis tetrahedron piece to form a chain and channel parallel to the X-axis (fiber extension direction, namely axis A, 5.2A° in length). There are five octahedral positions in the attapulgite chain, and the radius of the cross-sectional area of the channel is (3.7A°× 6.4A°). The pore is filled with zeolite water. Attapulgite fibers are about 0.5 ~ 1μm in length, with a ratio of length to diameter of 20 ∶ 1. Some fibers are more than 1 cm long, and their crystal shapes are needle-like, rod-like and fibrous.

Attapulgite light gravity (2.0 ~ 2.3g/cm3), Mohs hardness 2-3, when wet, viscous and plastic, dry shrinkage, and does not produce cracking, water absorption is strong, can reach more than 150%,PH=8.5±1, due to the internal porous, larger than the surface, Up to 500m2/g, most cations, water molecules and organic molecules of a certain size can be directly adsorbed into the pore, electrochemical performance is stable, not easy to be flocculated by electrolyte, good stability in high temperature and salt water.

Attapulgite is widely used in petroleum and chemical industry due to its excellent properties. It is worth noting that attapulgite has a high specific surface area, excellent adsorption performance, strong selective adsorption capacity, large cation exchange capacity (CEC) and high viscosity. These special properties determine its excellent performance as a desiccant.
